“Do not judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant. It’s not so much about what you achieve each day but rather how much effort and passion you put into doing it.” - Robert Louis Stevenson
For Natasha Nicole Tan, completing the Kumon Maths Programme is a priceless accomplishment. Besides the academic benefits, she has also learned to remain focused on her goals and to believe in herself; for there is nothing such as possible or impossible. It is the individual that defines the difference.
Q: When and why did you enrol in Kumon?
I joined Kumon when I was very young but stopped when I was in primary two. I re-enrolled after my Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE). At that time, I thought I would like to give it a try again because I knew that secondary school Maths would be much tougher. Besides, I have seen the higher level worksheets and found them to be very relevant to the Maths syllabus in secondary school.
Q: In what ways has Kumon helped you in school?
Kumon has allowed me to study beyond my school grade level, hence I find it easier to understand Maths concepts when the same topics are being taught later in school.
For example, I learnt Trigonometry (Level M) in Kumon when I was in secondary two in school, but this topic was only taught in school in secondary three. Since I had learnt the formulae and concepts through the Kumon worksheets, understanding them in class was a breeze and I managed to do my assignments well with little help from my teacher.
Q: What other benefits have you gained from the programme?
Kumon has taught me to be more disciplined and to learn how to prioritise my schedule. This changed me in terms of my attitude towards work. This does not just apply to Kumon, it applies to my school life as well. For topics that I have learnt earlier, I also enjoy sharing what I already know with my classmates so that we can learn together.
All in all, I have learnt to be more positive when facing challenges and not to let obstacles put me down.
Q: What motivated you to complete the programme?
Solving problems that I did not know how to do initially, completing each level and progressing to the next gave me a sense of accomplishment. It is the accumulation of this sense of accomplishment that kept pushing me to complete the programme.
Not forgetting my Instructors, who never failed to guide and remind me how close I was to reaching my goals. They gave me the motivation I needed to complete the programme. My family also gave me constant encouragement and support throughout my Kumon journey. Their motivation spurred me on to reach my goals.
Reading the testimonies and life stories of those who have already completed the programme before me also encouraged me to complete the programme.
Natasha has been pursuing her passion in ballet and piano for 10 years. Like what she did in Kumon, she practised hard daily to reach the level she is at right now. Being a student councillor and a Girl Guide in school, Natasha is able to develop her leadership qualities through organising school activities and she is definitely enjoying school life.
