Learning and Growing Together

Chia Ming, Eu Sin, Eu Chia & Eu Tint Teo

Subject/s:
Mathematics
Started:
11, 10, 9 & 9 years old

The Teo family is made up of their parents and four children – big brother Chia Ming, sister Eu Sin and the twins Eu Chia and Eu Tint. All four children joined Kumon in August 2012. The parents’ initial plan was to enroll Chia Ming to enhance his foundation in maths, but the three girls themselves were also keen to join. Not knowing what to expect at first, the siblings were nervous about going to Kumon, but this soon changed to intrigue after their first class day.

Starting from the basics

Despite already being in primary school when they first enrolled with Kumon, Chia Ming, Eu Sin, Eu Chia and Eu Tint started from doing basic addition in Kumon, with the help of their fingers. Many parents often wonder why children are started on lower levels in Kumon and Mr and Mrs Teo also had this question in mind. After seeing the changes in their own children, they can now understand the reasons why it is important to build a strong foundation. “Starting them at a low level helps to build their interest in the subject and shows them that it is easy and they can do it. If it is too difficult from the start, they might dislike and resist it,” Mr. Teo said. “I think that building a strong foundation is very important,” Mrs Teo added.

Developing mental calculation skills

About two weeks after enrolment, the mental calculation skills of the four improved quickly and they no longer depended on their fingers to count. Eu Tint shared these positive changes one year on from starting with Kumon: “We’re faster now when we do mental sums.” Her sister Eu Sin agrees: "Especially in Primary 5 and 6, we cannot use calculators in some parts of the maths exam paper, so if we do not practice daily, we might be slower than our peers and may not be able to finish the paper in time.”

The earlier the better

Eu Chia and Eu Tint are now studying fractions in Kumon, a topic that is yet to be taught in school. Mr and Mrs Teo are quite pleased with their children’s progress, but they revealed that they have one small regret - that is, not starting Kumon earlier. “Children will have a better understanding in maths if they build a strong foundation early. This can help them to focus, handle problems easily, gain confidence and interest in the subject, and also have more time for other subjects,” Mrs Teo said.
