Excellent Advanced Student Features: Ng Ding Yi

Over 50 years of establishment in Japan, we have witnessed the amazing potential that our students display through their achievements in Kumon. Through studying materials designed to enable students to learn according to their own ability, students are able to develop their learning ability and maximise potential.

In our 'Excellent Advanced Student Features' section, we take a look at some of our outstanding students who have achieved five years and advanced of their Kumon study and how they have benefited from their Kumon journey.

Ng Ding Yi

Looking at Ding Yi now and one would have never guessed he would cry whenever he met with challenges in his work when he was a little boy. Started with Kumon when he was six years old, Ng Ding Yi is now a confident teenager with strong resolve to achieve his goals once he sets his mind on them.

“There are others better than me.” Though he has achieved advanced study of 5 years and above in Kumon, Ding Yi is humble about his accomplishments and is more determined to study harder to achieve even better performances in his studies. Having built a strong foundation in Maths through Kumon, Ding Yi is now able to cope well with the subject and even relishes the challenges Maths brings.

With an ardent interest in Maths, Ding Yi currently participates in the Maths Olympiad team in school as a co-curricular activity. Solving advanced Maths questions in the team as their training, Ding Yi’s extensive knowledge gained from the Maths programme in Kumon helped him as the worksheet level he is now doing covers the same topic as well.

Always eager to improve himself, Ding Yi hopes to complete the programme to further utilise his knowledge gained from Kumon in his studies. Whenever he meets with challenges, Ding Yi says he will always recall his mother’s encouragement. Mrs Ng plays a very supportive role in Ding Yi’s studies. When she enrolled Ding Yi in the Maths programme, her initial reason was to let him gain a head start in school. Thereafter, Mrs Ng encouraged Ding Yi to persevere and to “continue the task through to the end” by completing the programme.

“Ding Yi is now independent in his studies and proactive in his learning. Advanced study has helped him to think independently and Kumon worksheets have trained him to solve problems in different ways. I am proud of him.”

With strong support and encouragement from his family and instructor, Ding Yi wishes to encourage other students as well. “Don’t give up when you meet difficult questions. Take a different perspective of things and you would be able to solve them eventually.”
