Student Testimonial Vol.11
A Family of Maths Lovers
Lucas & Gustavo Nakashita
- 7 & 3 years old
The Nakashitas, a Brazilian expatriate family, moved to Singapore in 2007. The then 7-year-old Lucas and 3-year-old Gustavo were very excited about going to Kumon and, as surprising as it may seem, their mother Mrs Lucia Nakashita decided to enroll herself in the Centre as well only a few short months after her children started learning with Kumon.
Today the Nakashitas are not just another family, but a family of Kumon Completers and achievers. Lucas completed the Kumon Maths Programme in 2012 when he was 12 years old, covering senior high school level maths materials. Soon after, Mrs Nakashita also completed the programme. Gustavo, who is 9 years old, is currently studying logarithms and inequalities (topics that are meant for those five years above his current school grade level) in Kumon.
Although Mrs Nakashita was ahead of Lucas in the Maths Programme at first, Lucas eventually surpassed her when he reached Level M (trigonometric functions). “While studying with Kumon together with the boys at the same time, I could help Lucas and Gustavo a lot. But after Level L (logarithms & calculus), Lucas knew more than me,” she explained. It was beyond the Mrs Nakashita’s and her husband’s expectations that the boys could progress so fast and even study materials above their school grade level.
Lucas and Gustavo also excel in the International Community School. “Gustavo is the best in Maths in the whole of third grade,” Mrs Nakashita shared with pride. Gustavo even dreams of becoming a Maths teacher when he grows up! Having learnt many maths-related topics in Kumon, Lucas and Gustavo face little difficulty in school and they are often more than glad to lend a helping hand to their peers who approach them for guidance. “This is the confidence that Kumon has given to my children,” Mrs Nakashita said.
