Getting the Headstart in School
Loh Guan Yang
- Mathematics & English
- 3½ years old
“I want to learn new things!” said Guan Yang. He may be only eight, but you might be surprised by how much he knows at his age. Loh Guan Yang is not just a bookworm, but also an enthusiastic learner who finds joy in discovering and sharing new knowledge with others.
“We wanted him to be independent,” Guan Yang’s parents shared their initial intention for enrolling Guan Yang in Kumon. Soon after enrolling in Kumon at a mere age of three and a half years old, Guan Yang became independent quickly. Since then, he always takes responsibility for his work and is excited about attending Kumon classes. “The progress is very good and I would like him to reach completion for both the English and Maths programmes,” Mrs Loh added.
Passion for Reading & Knowledge
Guan Yang enjoys reading and his parents would often go the distance to hunt for the books that he comes across in the Kumon worksheets. “The stories in the English worksheets are very interesting and he will ‘pester’ me to buy the books for him,” Mrs Loh said. Mr Loh also observed that Guan Yang’s attitude towards studying is getting better over time. “He always thinks that he has something new to learn and looks forward to sharing his newly-acquired knowledge with us,” Mr Loh added.
Aside from his growing interest in reading, Guan Yang gained a great deal of general knowledge through completing the Kumon worksheets. He also developed a strong interest in Science, which is not taught to him in school yet, through reading the non-fiction stories in the Kumon worksheets and the ‘Young Scientist’ magazines.
A Headstart in School
Children entering primary school remains as one of the major concerns of parents in Singapore. “In fact, every parent will want their child to know how to read and count before he/she enters primary school,” Mrs Loh revealed. Enrolling her child in Kumon at a young age addressed these considerations and alleviated much of her worries about Guan Yang entering primary one last year.
Guan Yang, who is currently studying Maths Level G (Algebra and Equations) and English Level FII (Unravelling Text and Concision), has learnt various topics way before reaching his school grade equivalent. “With the work that he has gone through, we do not think he will have any problems in school,” Mr Loh added. Despite studying almost only by himself without guidance, Guan Yang is ever ready for any test that his teachers may give in class.
Motivated to become an inventor or teacher (or even a Kumon Instructor) when he grows up, Guan Yang never stops learning every single day regardless of the challenges he may face. “No matter how hard it is, one should never quit!” Guan Yang said with conviction.
