Kumon Singapore Celebrates the Achievements of its Brightest Students at the 20th Advanced Students Forum
On the theme of “Pursuit of Potential”, National Olympic Rower Saiyidah Aisyah shared her Olympic dream with awardees
486 Kumon Singapore students and Kumon programme completers were awarded at this year's Advanced Students Forum. Held at the Star Theatre on Saturday, 1 October 2016, the forum recognised the outstanding achievements and academic progression of Kumon students.
The annual event awards students who study five years ahead of school grade level in the Kumon Mathematics, English and Chinese programmes. Completers, students who have fully completed at least one of the Kumon programmes, were also recognised at the forum. 362 Kumon students awarded consisted of Kindergarten Two to Secondary Three students.
The youngest awardees were seven Kindergarteners (K2) enrolled in Kumon’s Mathematics programme. The youngest Completer was a Primary Three student from the Kumon English programme.
General Manager of Kumon Singapore, Mr Allan Menagh, shared with the awardees that Kumon founder, Mr Toru Kumon, envisioned a ranking of intellectual achievements similar to that of the Olympics as a ranking of athletic achievements. He also emphasised that Kumon students are independent self-learners with the ability to overcome new challenges in Singapore’s future.
National Olympic rower, Saiyidah Aisyah, drew on her personal experiences and urged awardees to discover their dreams and to set goals in pursuit of those dreams. She also spurred them to instill resilience every day and to consistently challenge themselves to reach greater heights no matter the circumstances.
“Kumon is an inspiration to the children today”, said Aisyah. “I am encouraged to see so many promising young students performing so well and am very glad to be able to share my experiences with them today. I hope they will continue to have the drive to excel in all that they do”, she added.
“It was inspiring to hear from an Olympian and I am now more determined to work harder to pursue my aspirations”, said Sparshkumar, an awardee and Secondary Two student.
