Charles’ mother, chose Kumon as it is a well-thought programme that would be able to help Charles progress independently of the time she had for him as he was her third child. Through his learning journey, she observed that Charles developed three very important skills after two years of study: perseverance to complete a task, the ability to learn independently through careful observation and application, and responsibility over his own work.

Charles started his Kumon learning at the age of four. By that age, he could already recognise quantities and sequences of numbers as well as add using number bonds and count in groups. Now at six years old, Charles is studying algebra and simultaneous equations. Though he has not learnt this concept in school, he finds joy in learning and always looks forward to the next level of worksheets.

Looking at Charles’ love for learning, his mum supports him by not limiting his learning with reference to what is being taught in school. “Learning is a continuous and endless process. Limiting a child’s learning by reference with what is being taught in school can seriously interrupt and limit the child’s learning as well as his potential,” said Charles’ mother when asked about her views on Charles learning ahead of his age.

Occasionally, Charles would complain that the worksheets are difficult. His mother views this as normal and healthy. As Charles develops emotionally or intellectually, there will be periods of frustrations when faced with new challenges before he overcomes them and is happy again. What is important to her as a parent is that Charles develops perseverance in conquering challenges.

Believing that acquiring this perseverance and responsibility to finish a task will see Charles through in life, his mother is also assured that she will not have homework hassles when Charles enters primary school.

It is not difficult to understand why Charles says, “Kumon worksheets are Easy-peasy!”
