Student Testimonial Vol. 17
Vol. 18 The Chance to Learn Independently
Krisna S. Deva
- English & Mathematics
- 4 years old
“We wanted Krisna to have the chance to learn English by himself in Kumon.”
Krisna's Kumon journey began when he was 4, with level 7A1 of the Kumon English Programme where he learnt basics such as familiarising himself with words by repeating them. Five years on, he has advanced 3 years beyond school grade level in English and matured in his attitude towards learning.
“After being in Kumon, Krisna’s learning attitude is good and he reads a lot more now,” said his father. “He learnt many vocabulary words and can express himself well.” He also enjoys doing Kumon worksheets and even “shares the stories in the passages with his mother and sister.”
“I really enjoy the history stories,” Krisna enthused, when asked what he likes about Kumon English worksheets.
Of Roald Dahl novels, Mr Midnight and Geronimo Stilton
He is also an avid reader of fiction.
“I go to the school library twice a week to borrow books. My favourite book series is Geronimo Stilton – the characters and adventure stories are so nice,” said Krisna.
It is no surprise that this articulate student is passionate about reading. His interest is further encouraged by his parents who often bring him and his sister to the public library to borrow books.
As a child’s reading skills are important for their language development and academic success, Krisna’s reading habit has definitely given him a good headstart.
Success Through Consistent Work
“I tell myself not to get frustrated as Kumon helps me get good grades in exams.”
Diligence and determination have helped Krisna progress well in Kumon and in school. Daily work has not only improved his Mathematics and English, but also helped him in his Science – he picks it up fast with a good command of English.
Moreover, self-learning at Kumon has cultivated in him a positive attitude towards work and challenges.
When asked how Kumon benefits children, Krisna said, “If they know faster than school, it is easy for them but they must not be overconfident. In P1 English, I made so many mistakes because I feel that I know everything. Now I check.”
And when he encounters difficult questions, instead of giving up and asking for help, he always attempts the questions first.
His father shared, “Krisna is independent and will do his Kumon work on his own when he comes back from school in the afternoons on weekdays. It has been his routine to do Kumon work for at least 30-40 minutes every day since a young age. We want to keep him learning at an optimum level and not pressure him too much.”
Krisna needs no push and sets his own goals. The self-motivated student aims to complete the Kumon English Programme simply because he finds it fun and challenging. “Because I enjoy English, I can speak and write well… I feel happy when I can teach my friends in class,” he shared.
