An Evening of Fun and Learning for Kumon Students and Parents at the Singapore Writers Festival 2016
Kumon students and parents came together at the SWF3 Tent, Empress Lawn on 9 November for a fun-filled evening with local authors. Adeline Foo, author of the bestselling Amos Lee series, along with illustrator Stephanie Wong, took to the stage for the first workshop (Weird and Wonderful Creatures) of the evening. They shared with students and parents on conceptualizing stories and characters for their stories and how they found inspiration from their everyday situations to bring their stories to life. The session concluded with a hands-on crafting session where our students got to create and bring home their very own animal characters.
The second workshop (Villain School) of the evening had the husband-and-wife team of Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low-Jimenez; collectively known as AJ Low and writers of the Sherlock Sam series, conjuring up a vile villain character with our students. After gaining an insight into how some iconic villains from movies and cartoons are portrayed, our students teamed up with the authors to create their very own villain. Each of our students had an input into the character’s appearance, psychology, motivation and at the end, a vote was cast to decide a name for the villain they created. Armed with the knowledge gained from the authors, our students were encouraged to further expand their imagination at home and create heroes and characters for their own stories.
Our students also had the chance to relax and indulge in a selection of hand-picked books by Books Ahoy! and sponsored by Kumon at the Kumon Reading Corner in the SWF3 Tent.
Kumon Singapore is proud to be sponsoring the Singapore Writers Festival again this year, as we cultivate the love of reading and writing in our students and the community.
