Enrichment Class Helps Child Prepare for Primary One
Transition from preschool to Primary One might be a terrifying experience for some students. This is especially so as they move from a class size of ten students in preschool to one that has thirty to forty students in Primary One. Henceforth, there are parents who are willing to work hard to prepare their child or a more intensive and packed curriculum in Primary One.
To allow their child to adapt to a new concept in Primary One, more parents are now enrolling their children in enrichment classes so that their child is able to navigate Primary One with greater ease and confidence.
According to Chief Instructor and Kumon franchisee, Ms Maimunah Jumat, the number of preschoolers who have enrolled in Kumon enrichment classes have increased over the years.
In 2016, the number of preschoolers made up 36.7% of Kumon’s total student enrolment, with the majority being Kindergarten Two students.
“We also hold Free Trial classes twice a year and 60% of respondents are parents with preschoolers” said Ms Maimunah.
Kumon enrichment classes are held at some 50 branches, offering English and Mathematics programmes to children from as young as three years old. From feedback received by her team, Ms Maimunah said that many parents found that by enrolling their kids in enrichment classes, they are better able to familiarise themselves with the concept of homework. It also helped the students to learn and solve problems independently.
“Imagine in a class of 40 Primary schoolers, the teacher may not be able to help students individually. Therefore, being a student who can think critically and solve problems independently is a very beneficial trait to the students themselves” said Ms Maimunah.
Enrichment classes such as Kumon offer classes that help prepare children for Primary One.
Enrichment Class Brings Benefit to Child’s Performance
Even though her child was only in Kindergarten 2, Ms Siti Sarah Mohamed AlJuhari, aged 34, had enrolled her child into Kumon’s English and Mathematics enrichment classes. The housewife said that she had no regrets enrolling her child into the enrichment classes as it proved to be a beneficial move when she looked at her child’s performance in school now. Her child, seven year old Erlisya Insyirah Mohamed Hafiiz, who studies at Telok Kurau Primary, is now more confident in completing daily tasks assigned by her teachers.
“This is what I desire. I want my child to be confident in handling any task assigned by her teachers. Whenever there are Mathematics assignments, she would tell me that she is confident and is able to answer the questions well and accurately” said Ms Siti who pays $280 per month for English and Math subjects at Kumon.
Initially, Ms Siti Sarah admitted that the homework assigned by the enrichment Centre at Bedok Reservoir Road was rather difficult for her child’s level of understanding then. However, she believes that the individual assistance and attention given by Kumon has helped increased her child’s confidence in solving Mathematics problems beyond her level of understanding. Home assignments that is often given by the enrichment Centre is not a burden to Erlisya as she enjoys doing them. She said perhaps this has sharpened her understanding of the subject. Therefore, homework assigned by her school teachers is no longer considered difficult by her and she is able to complete them on her own.
Ms Siti Sarah strongly encourages mothers to send their K2 children to enrichment classes.
“Parents may appear fierce to their child when they attempt to teach them. So when there is someone else who is conducting the class, they are more disciplined. A more conducive environment also plays a role in shaping their interest in a particular subject” said Ms Siti Sarah.
“I believe all parents want their children to be more successful than themselves” said Ms Siti Sarah.
She hoped that her daughter would go to the Express stream and not the Normal Academic stream like herself.
Ms Siti Sarah is able to see a positive development in her child after enrolling her in Kumon enrichment classes since she was K2.
